SCAD Kittens

Remember these babies?

We finally found a temporary home for them at the Soi Cats and Dogs center.

I approached them knowing that adoption isn’t their priority as I was desperate to find home for these kittens.

As I tweeted, or blogged, before, the last batch of babies by this stray mother cat were met with untimely death, thanks to the “kindness” of the condo management, who thought these kittens were making too much mess in the garden around their pool.

I later asked someone from the condo, and they said the kittens were actually left at a nearby temple, though you can’t really be sure, considering the temple is right next to Klong Saen Sap.

But anyway, we wanted to get the mom sterilized but then she got pregnant again, and this time with these cute little babies, and we couldn’t let them get killed again.

So I asked SCAD what they could do. Turned out the kittens were eligible for their Rehoming program. Usually the center would go to a neighborhood, neuter the dogs and cats, and bring in ones that they think would be adoptable (healthy, clean, nice). They don’t encourage people to drop the animals at the center, but we were lucky as they said these kittens would find home quickly.

Now the kittens are up for adoption, as well as the mother, to our surprise. They usually release sterilized animals back into the neighborhood but the mother however charmed the staff and got herself a spot on the adoption list also.

So, if you’re planning to get yourself a cat, consider SCAD instead of a pet store. It’s free to adopt and they always make sure the animals are friendly and healthy before putting them up for adoption.

Photos of the babies and the mother cat will be posted on their website soon, and I will update this post with the links to them.

A Day at the Zoo

Well it was more like an hour at the zoo. We did what a couple stuck in town on a long weekend would do–go to touristy places.

Believe it or not I had never been to Dusit Zoo. There are a lot of Lonely Planet must-sees in Bangkok that I have yet to go. Wat Prakaew? I mean it’s like living in Paris and not going to see the Eiffel or in LA and not walk the Walk of Fame. It’s just something a locally born person would not do. Right? Or is it just me?

Anyway the zoo, for what it is, it’s OK. I mean I expected a little more from a royally run park but that’s just it, it looks like a big park, with lake where you can boat around and mini theme rides for kids that don’t look too safe. And what is up with Thai people having to crank up the volume for everything they do? Animal shows are turned into a look-thoong concerts. Heck, there IS even a look-thoong concert venue inside the zoo.

The animals there are cute but sad at the same time. In their own little cages sleeping or lying around. Some are even alone like the bear I saw, with no one to play with. Their cages are not the brightest of living space either, making it even more depressing to see them in there. I bet the place never got any maintenance or renovation since it opened.

I have been to Safari World and Sri Racha Tiger Zoo and to tell you the truth, Dusit Zoo is by far the best in shape, just to give you an idea of how zoos are operated here. I feel bad for the animals. In every other city a zoo is a must-visit for their spectacular animals and facilities. Here? I have no words for it.

I’d say go visit there just so they could get some money. The fee is only B50, hardly a struggle. Get the tram ride if you’re too lazy. We did.

Here’s a highlight from my visit to the zoo. My new favorite pet. An ah-sia* meerkat.

Meerkat

For those who don’t know what ah-sia means, go to Phrom Phong BTS Station, walk down to Emporium’s open-air parking lot and face yourself towards the Robin Hood pub. Right underneath the BTS station on the sidewalk, next to a pharmacy you will see a picture framing shop. There’s always an ah-sia sitting there, topless with his beer belly all shown to the world, with a beat-up poodle on his lap. What a sight.

I Can’t Watch It Anymore

But this dog needs to be honored.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Chileans have a new hero: an apparently homeless dog that pulled the body of another dog through traffic off a busy highway.

A surveillance camera on a Santiago freeway captured images of a dog trotting past speeding cars to pull the lifeless body of the other canine, which had been run over by a vehicle, away from traffic and onto the median strip.

The scene was broadcast by Chilean television stations and then posted on Web sites such as YouTube.com, and hundreds of thousands of people had viewed versions of it by Monday.

Highway crews removed both the dead and live dogs from the median strip of the Vespucio Norte Highway shortly after the Dec. 4 incident. But the rescuer dog ran away.

Authorities say images of the rescue prompted some people to call and offer to adopt the dog, but neither highway workers nor a television crew could find they animal.
