Byte Me, Bangkok

Yeah see look what Tumblr has done to me. Honestly, if there weren’t blogger at the time, I would have started blogging on Tumblr.

The service is easy to use, pretty, multimedia-oriented and just look at the array of free templates on offer, they’re nowhere near the corniness of those offered by other free blogging sites. And you have complete control over the HTML so take that Wordpress.com!

That’s why I got myself another Tumblr just so I could use it more often. There are good shots to be taken in Bangkok but nowhere near the number of complaints I have for Thailand’s incompetent IT world. So I thought I should spare Gnarly Kitty stumblers my geek rants and have a place for them specifically instead.

I got the idea when I was trying to get a hold of a human True Move customer relation person. Calling their customer service number and all you get is a prerecorded machine. To get to the human, you have to go to the menu that asks you to sign up or buy something. If only there was a way to throw my anger out into the world as I am sure I am not the only one having these murderous thoughts against Thai telecom companies.

After announcing it on Twitter I immediately got replies from people who feel the same way. And what do you know? I now have loudmouth opinionated geeks I got to know as co-authors who could help me make the posts stray a little further from Macs, iPhones and AIS. Well it will be balanced once they start posting something!

It’s been only two days and it already has more Tumblarity than my main one.

What’s the deal with Twitter?

When I first came across Twitter, I didn’t see much of its potential. With “What are you doing?” as an encouragement tagline, I thought this thing was pointless.

But like David Pogue said in his recent article about Twitter, you actually are NOT supposed to tweet about what you’re doing, and actually avoid doing that at all costs.

OK, I am guilty of that sometimes. But for me, Twitter is more like a place for me to do a quick rant or opinion that wouldn’t otherwise deserve a whole blog post.

A rant about a skank eyeing me down on the BTS
A statement of regret after paying for a B5,000 dress
A random vicious thought that I wouldn’t otherwise say to the face of an incompetent salesperson.

Something like that.

But then there is a group of people, most of which I have already stopped following, who tweet everything and anything at any minute about what they’re doing, eating, going, wearing, hearing, listening, feeling, reading, anything-ing.

Seriously. Stop. This is spamming.

Currently I am following 30 people, most of them being bloggers whose blogs I am already reading. What Twitter does for bloggers is being an alternative source for readers to read something they wouldn’t otherwise get to read on the blogs. Like kang of Siampod.com for example who gives updates on the Mac world on his Twitter more than on his iPod-oriented blog. Or David Pogue who rarely tweets about computers and gadgets unless he’s promoting his articles.

But really some people are misusing the thing. This is one thing I recently discussed with a completely internet-illiterate person about the difference between blogs and Twitter and even he has a point.

Twitter is not an RSS reader and should not be used as one.

OK it’s a great way to promote your blog or your posts but don’t just leave it for that. Blogs like mine that update every few days are harmless. But seriously, Bangkok Post? I doubt anyone wants to get updates every time the UDD eggs someone.

Twitter is a great community blog. You can to reply and respond to people’s tweets. David Pogue even DM’d (direct message) me once telling me he honeymooned in Thailand! You can add pictures or videos and links get shortened for your convenient, great for live-blogging and a quick shoutout. But it should be something separate or at least different. Otherwise what is the point of using an RSS?

Or is Twitter the new RSS and I am completely clueless?

Wordpress.tv

This is just great. Just when I slaved myself over this blog, spent agonizing days in figuring out how to install, move hosts, fix CSS, solve database issues, etc, and finally got my Wordpress blog up and running, this happened:

Unfaithful

I have been unfaithful to you I am so sorry.

Right from the start, the way you made me feel, I told you I would never leave you for another.

I know we have had some rough times. When we fight, I feel like I don’t know you anymore. I still love you, please don’t ever forget that, but I think it is time for me to move on.

I have been seeing another person. He’s very much like you but there are some things about him that make me feel more special, more secure, and more…me.

I no longer have to hide behind your shadows. Always on the lookout whether you’d be in good enough a mood for me to approach you.

I’m sorry this is happening but it’s really time for me to move on. The past three years have been educational, loving, and most of all, you’ve given me the best gift I could have ever asked for. But I’ve just found someone better, someone who could offer me much more.

I’m not leaving you now, not yet. I want to make this process the least painful for you. I’m just letting you know that…

Blogger.. I’m leaving you for Wordpress.

TV Twits

Two years ago I was typing on my computer.

This year it's all about twitter baby. My best advice if you want to track updates, the fastest way is on Twitter.

But of course Bangkok Pundit still rocks.

Me? Watching TV now.
