Not So Gated

I live in a gated mooban, the same one I have been living in for the past 23 years. It’s a pretty big village and I’m not going to lie, this place is full of big houses with big cars and big haired ladies. But judging from the zip code, it is nowhere near what you would call a city center. Around the mooban are jungles, klongs, and not much else.

With the recession going on worldwide and all it should come as no surprise to see that the crime rate would go up to. The thing is that, I never thought that the crime would be happening in my secured, gated community.

This week alone, two houses on my block have already been burgled, and one of them is literally our next door neighbor whom we share a wall with.

Mind you, crime almost never happened here. When it did, it was either a maid or someone from the inside. We never had any reasons to barb wire our walls or lock bathroom windows. And that’s exactly what happened to the house next to ours. The burglar came through the toilet window.

Despite the community being gated, meaning outsiders, even taxi drivers, have to trade in their ID cards and gets their license plate logged each time they enter, there’s still a loophole–the klong–which cuts right through the village. The idea of klong buffers would have worked great if we were still living in Ayuthaya period when they didn’t have motorboats or global warming to dry up the klongs to just the waist level. And guess what? My other wall is right next to a klong, so is the neighbor’s.

We do have those sharp pointy wires along the walls near the klong but what we forgot are the trees with branches reaching out. According to the security, that’s how the burglar managed to get inside the perimeter.

And one thing we all realized is that, they’re no longer interested in TVs, stereos or money anymore. Besides the obvious of jewelry, they’re now stealing mobile phones, MP3 players and laptops.

They’re aiming for MY things.

My room has no valuables except my laptop, my iPhone and credit cards which are not the objects of their desire. I don’t wear jewelry or expensive watches and even if I did, it wouldn’t devastate me as much if I had lost my gadgets. I would die if I woke up and see my Macbook or iPhone missing.

But then again, if they managed to get into my room to steal my things, I probably wouldn’t be alive or whole enough to rant about it afterwards.

So from not ever locking my bedroom door or windows, I am now doing that for the first time in 23 years.

New Theme Again

I still can’t figure out what is wrong with my blog.

The Lost Boy said it took him 20-something seconds to load it. My friend in Paris got it in 5 whole minutes! My London friend said it took her roughly 5 seconds and for me about the same or even less.

I called the host guy who said there’s nothing wrong with it. The page loaded just as when I was about to start bitching at him about how slow it would take him to see the page.

So I switched to this minimal theme, replaced some unnecessary PHP codes, got rid of embedded sidebar stuff and deleted unused plugins, but I’m still skeptical about this.

And how the hell am I supposed to switch host when I just paid B2,500 for one year of hosting, which apparently is working well for other sites–big corporate sites–who are using the same service!

Just my luck.

All is well. Back to my old theme.

Border War?

WTF? A war? Over a land? In 21st Century?

Two guys were killed already.

That’s it. We’re reverting.

PS: Ah, crap. Was editing the template for HaloScan because the spacing looked funny and I ended up screwing up the whole codes!

Sorry haters, your recently published trolling comments were all lost. Feel free to repost.

The Reality

Today I was hit with a big fat chunk of reality when I was looking through my account balance.

For the past 2 months I have spent my whole paycheck completely. Not that I have a hefty ward of cash handed to me with this job but it is still a lot of money. And the scariest thing is, I have no idea where it all went to. Until I retraced my steps.

All this time I have in mind that I roughly spend around B6,000-8,000 a month but I was way off. With food alone I’m already spending around B5,000 a month. And then there’s trips to Zara, that 50% off pair of shoes I gotta have, B400 plates of pasta, B200 Hello Kitty keychain that goes with my new B200 case for the iPhone which just had a B1,000 upgrade to 2.1 firmware. And the list just goes on and on.

As I was going through the free App list on iTunes I found this application that lets you set your budget for things. You can set the topic of your budget, food, clothes, shopping, etc. and then you set the budget for each. You can have it refreshed monthly or weekly or even daily.

So starting today, this App will be my life. No matter how much I spend, B35 street food dish or B2,000 pair of shoes, I’m going to put it in and I’m not going to lie. I mean how can I lie the results are printed in my bank book every month.

Today is Oct 1 a great day to start since I just banked in my money. Let’s see how I take it this month.

If it’s not happening, maybe it’s time to be a sell-out and start making money working for The Man.

Bangkok to Samui

Bua, are you dead?

SURAT THANI: — Heavy rain and flooding on the popular Gulf of
Thailand tourist destination of Samui island are still severe and the island’s
airport has suspended operations.

Heavy downpours are continuing in the province for the third consecutive day.

Flood levels in some parts of the commercial centre and tourist sites on
Samui are as high as one metre.

Some roads have been cut off. Samui airport suspended service Thursday morning
due to heavy rain, and more than 1,000 travellers have been left stranded.

Meanwhile, ferry services to Samui island still operate as usual but the number
of cars being carried has dropped by half due to the bad weather conditions, according
to an official at the waterfront.
