Dukey has just had his first episode of hypoglycemia, when the glucose in his blood is too low. He was shaking and could not stand.
After the last visit to the vet, she said he needed to increase his dose of insulin. Now we're giving him too much.
Mom said it's better to have high sugar than low. Too low could be fatal within minutes.
We were out, dad noticed something was wrong when he came over to him all shaky. Dad gave him some spoonfuls of honey and he was better.
My poor little Dukey..

Ever since he was diagnosed with diabetes, Dukey has been forced to eat healthily with diet composing mostly of fibers and protein.
That’s Atkins for dogs.
And it’s been working fine. He lost a lot of weight, looks more like a dog than a polar bear now and it doesn’t hurt my back so much just to lift him up.
His meals now compose of a can of the W/D Prescription Diet. That thing smells like old rags and the looks of the thing when it blobs onto the dish from the can doesn’t make it any more appealing at all. Think of oatmeal, mashed with red beans and compressed in a can for seven days in the sun.
My mom has to buy baby food and put a few drop of it on the food to make him eat it. Sometimes my mom wraps the dung of a meal in fresh lettuce. As strange as it may sound, Dukey loves vegetables. He can eat lettuce, string beans and celery any moment. He’s now completely off snacking or anything tasty for that matter as tastes=calories.
Then this past few days, he has stopped eating completely.
He still chomps on lettuce but that poo poo food he has to eat, I think he would rather be back on IV than having to eat that shit.
Now the thing is, without enough food in his stomach, we can’t give him insulin. And without insulin, his sugar level will go through the roof again.
But according to the vet, it’s better to have too high sugar than too low in your blood.
Sigh, I can’t even eat food in front of him anymore, I can’t stand those sad looking eyes that are begging for just a little taste.
Dukey is home.
Along with a bottle of insulin, 20 packs of syringes and needles, and 10 cans of Prescription Diet W/D.
But he’s home, safe, and very stinky.
My mom noticed something wrong with him last week when he started to drink more than usual.
My mom googled it before we took him to the hospital and my mom was right.
Dukey has diabetes.
He's been hospitalized since this morning with one tube of insulin in one hand and vitamins and medicine in the other. It was heart breaking to see him alone in the cage when I went to visit him tonight.

I brought him his pajamas and his favorite squeaky toy. He showed no interest in them. All he did was begging me to take him out of the cage.
I held him for a while until the vet came over. His blood sugar is in a very dangerous levels that's why he has to be hospitalized. But the vet said he's doing quite well for his level. Other dogs would have been depressed and vomitting but Dukey was still barking his heads off at strangers like usual.
After the vet brings his sugar level down to an OK zone, he will be allowed to go home but we might have to keep injecting him with insulin for the rest of his life.
Diabetes is caused by feeding dogs human food. We fed Dukey like regular dogs but he was meant to limit his diet to a ridiculously small portion as he was supposed to be a "teacup poodle" like his mommy, but we couldn't do it. We just didn't know how much was too much for a dog his size.
We wouldn't have taken him to the hospital if we didn't notice that something was wrong. If we had taken his frequent toilet visits as a sign of old age, we could have lost him already.
I miss his nonsensical barks and a lingering stench of a smell when he comes beg me for a scratch of his tummy. I hope he can come home soon.
