Look Shin, Remixed

I found this girl’s picture the other day and I was wondering how was it possible that this photo was featured in iPhone Photography Tumblr when clearly there was no app that could do this and it would go against the blog’s policy of posting iPhone-only photos.

Then I found the app.

Lo-Mob. And it became my 11th photography app on the iPhone.

To be honest, I bought it because of its tagline: Bring Retro to Your Mobile Pictures. It’s not like I don’t already have other Lomo-fying, Polaroid-izing, apps but this one just tops it all with over 25 formats.

Lomo, Holga, Polaroid, Slide, 35mm, etc. And they look authentic.

From a boring Look Shin shot like this:

ori-Lo-Mob 008

I now have these options to choose from:

There goes another $2.

But this surely won’t stop me from coming home from Wang Lang or Ratchada Night with a 30-year-old camera. But $2 does beat B5,000 for a retro shot.

*Yes I tried the app with a Look Shin photo I took at On Nut Square. I was hungry. And now I’m hungrier.

Polaroid is Back

There’s one type of camera I have yet to own. The Polaroid.

It’s a classic. It’s a camera you need if you’re planning on building a collection. But when I started my vintage camera obsession, there was an announcement from the Polaroid company that the cameras, and worse, the films, would be discontinued.

Well not anymore apparently, as reported by GeekSugar.com, one of my favorite sources for gadget news. And with the relaunch, they also releasing a limited edition kit, which comes with the classic SX-70.

What’s that?

It’s this, as explained by the legendary designer/architect/creative guru pair, Charles and Ray Eames, through their 10-minute long commercial from the 70s.

This is some advance Polaroid with the focusing, the mechanical body and flash!

Just checked the website and the kit is already sold out and it was retailed at US$490. I’m sure I can still find it somewhere in Bangkok, even at Ratchada Night, but I need to make sure that this revival is for real.

For now I’m just gonna stick to my Polarize App and Poladroid for my fix.

Comparison

I know most people think it’s stupid to switch to 3GS. But when you Twitter as much and take photo as religiously as I do, it does make your life a lot better.

S is really for speed. With the 3G, it took about 2 seconds for an App to show something besides the blank black screen. With Tweetie, if I had a lot of unread Tweets, it could take 5-6 seconds for them to load.

And yes it affects the speed of the download also. Since I am on AIS, I don’t have 3G. But Safari loads much faster now.

And the photos? OMG.

It’s not just the crispness, but the color also. More realistic and less murky. I haven’t actually been out and about to try the video. Would be a little awkward to just film my dog lying around in my bedroom. The Tumblr might be featuring videos soon if I find something worth filming.

Yashica

First roll, not very impressed. Only this baby is worthy of my praise.

Hose

Another try this weekend when I’m scattering my grandpa in the sea of Sattahip.

New Old Tech

I did it again. I got myself another vintage camera. Despite me being a self proclaimed Web 2.0 geek and all, this decades old toys get me everytime.

Yashica Twin-lens reflex 124G. For B4,000 instead of B10,000 something like it is going for around here, thanks to Daniel.

Did manage to finish two rolls of 120 this weekend, one composing of a trip to an exotic klong-side community near Jim Thomson’s house which my guide and I both agree to never do again. I’m getting the first roll developed tomorrow and we’ll see if my B4,000 and Daniel’s trip from South Africa and a baggage struggle with Emirates to deliver it was worth it.
